The first school to be a McKinley High School in Washington, D.C. was a “shoot-off” of Central High School (currently named Cardoza Senior High School) offering courses as a manual training school. A new building was required for a manual technical high school and U.S. Congress appropriated a total of $195,000 for the construction.

After construction in September, 1902, the building at Seventh and Rhode Island Avenue, N.W. was occupied and the following January 1903 it was formerly dedicated as the McKinley Manual Training School. It was in 1908 that U.S. Congress was convinced that the building should be enlarged and appropriated enough money to make a first addition and then later again in 1911 a section was added which faced the Rhode Island Avenue side and onto Marion Street. For eight years the building remained unchanged until 1919, and a mould shop was added, completing the McKinley Technical High School.

A need for a larger school persisted, so in October, 1921, a Greater Tech Committee was formed and purchased the present site in 1923. The new “Tech School” was authorized for construction at a cost not to exceed $2,230,000 by Congress and ground breaking took place on June 23, 1926 for erection of the existing building and the athletic grounds. It took two years to complete the school known as the new McKinley Technical High School.

The first annual year books used for McKinley High School were named “The Maroon and Gray” and later students became recognized as “McKinley Techites” and in 1928 the yearbooks were titled as “The Techite”. The last “Techite” year books were published until 1997 when the school was finally “shuttered up” and closed.
